The Shiba Inu (柴犬, Japanese pronunciation: ) is a breed of hunting dog originating from Japan. A small to medium-sized dog, it is the smallest of the six native breeds of Japan. The Shiba Inu was originally bred for hunting. Its name literally means "bush dog", as it was used to chase game. A small, alert and agile dog, it adapts well to hilly terrain and hiking trails. Its appearance is similar to other Japanese breeds such as the Akita Inu or Hokkaido, but the Shiba Inu is a different breed with its own bloodline, temperament, and smaller size than other Japanese breeds.
